Information Technology for Development
BSA (Business Software Alliance) will host Brazil Tech Forum, the fourth in a series of events dedicated to discussing innovation and challenges faced by the technology market. The event brings a discussion on the role of information technology in leading to and promoting development in emerging economies.”
Brazil Tech Forum will take place in São Paulo, on August 10th, 2004, and focus on the role played by the information technology industry in the promotion of development, bringing together executives and leaders of the IT industry, members of government, lawmakers and attorneys dedicated to the field of intellectual property. Software has recently been officially chosen by the Brazilian government as one of the “Strategic Sectors of Brazilian Industry for Growth”. The IT industry is regarded as a productivity-driver for the whole economy.
Software and IT innovation have changed, for the better, almost every aspect of our lives. The products and services of IT companies have helped improve productivity in the workplace, cut substantial costs in manufacturing and improved educational opportunities for children around the world.
Debate will take place through speeches and panels. Speakers include BSA CEO Robert Holleyman, Patrick Duddy, Consul General of the United States of America in São Paulo, and Eduardo Campos, Brazilian Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
The panels, moderated by journalist Paulo Henrique Amorim, will focus on the contribution that can be made by the IT industry to developing economies in their efforts to achieve development, economic as well as social.
On the first panel, Digital Inclusion for Social Inclusion – Needs and Challenges, Lee Kyo-Yong, Chairman of the Deliberation and Mediation Committee of South Korea, Armando de Queiroz Monteiro Neto, President of CNI (Brazilian League of Industries), Antonio Luiz Medeiros, President of the Anti-Piracy CPI (Parliamentary Inquiry Committee), Roberto Jaguaribe, Secretary of Technology of the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Commerce, and Jorge Sukarie, President of ABES (Brazilian Association of Software Industry), examine the importance of partnerships among governments and industries to the development of an IT industry as a driver for economic growth and social inclusion.
Opened by a keynote speech by Phill Bond, Under Secretary for Technology of the US Department of Commerce, and with the participation of Steve Blum, Sales VP of Autodesk, Fernando Loureiro, Corporate Affairs for Latin America of Dell Computers, Sérgio Amadeu, President of ITI (IT Institute of Brazilian Civilian Households), Julio Semeghini, Congressman and Member of Anti-Piracy CPI (Parliamentary Inquiry Committee), Bill Dolby, Vice President of Borland, and Orlando Barbieri, Country Manager of Symantec, the second panel, Promoting IT Trade, Investment and Export, will seek ways to create a favorable, legal and safe scenario to encourage investment and tech transfer and to increase export for Brazil.
